MORE RACING DAYS
FORECAST BY A MINISTER. WORK .AND RECREATION. NEEDS OF ISOLATED AREAS. (Per Press Association). ROTORUA, This Day. The belief that the time would come when there would be more racing days allotted in the Dominion was expressed by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) when replying to a deputation for the Rotorua Racing Club, which asked for an extra racing permit. The Minister stated that the Government stood for five daj r s work and two days recreation, and to follow this policy it would have to create facilities and to give people means to enjoy that recreation. He thought that encouragement should be given to hunt clubs, so as to engender the sporting spirit among the farming community and cater for isolated districts. Unless sporting facilities were provided in country districts, some of the farmers would drift to the cities for work. However, the turnover of the totalisator depended on the incomes of people, and the Government would also have to pass the necessary legislation to ensure a greater earning capacity for the people.
