DUTY NOT PAID
ATTEMPT TO SELL TOBACCO. CONVICTION OF TWO OFFENDERS EACH FINED THIRTY POUNDS. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, This Day, Two men who were caught in a tobacconist’s shop attempting to sell tobacco on which duty had not been paid, were charged in the Magistrate s Court with smuggling tobacco with intent to defraud the Customs revenue. Defendants, who pleaded guilty, were Ernest O’Mally, aged 33, a labourer, and Eugene Thomas Rowland Reid, aged 35, a salesman. The Collector of Customs (Mr C. 0. Trownson) said that the men had been found attempting to sell 41 pounds of tobacco. They would not give any account of where it came from, except io say it came from Nelson. One of the men admitted that the duty had not been paid. “There has been a good deal of illicit selling of tobacco during the last year or two and the Customs Department is rather disturbed about it,” said Mr Trownson. A fine of £3O and costs was imposed on each, of the men, and forfeiture of the tobacco ordered.
