USE FOR WAR DEBTS.
SENATOR’S IRONIC SUGGESTION
“6,000.000,000 DOLLARS OWED TO US.”
(United Press Association—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 4.
Senator J. H. Lewis, who is noted for his continued agitation about war debts, advanced a novel scheme today for meeting the financial difficulties. ’ . Speaking in an ironical vein, he suggested that Britain and France should pay the “6,000,000,000 dollars owed to Us,” which could be used to pay the veterans and the farmers. He pointed out that the soldiers were being paid for service on foreign soil.
His plan envisages tie issue by the debtor governments of small denomination bonds to the amount owed to America. The Treasury would market the bonds, applying the proceeds to the Government’s needs.
