SWIMMING.
EAST ASHBURTON CARNIVAL RACES FOR; CLUB TROPHIES. Several trophies were competed for at the East Ashburton Swimming Club’s carnival in the Hampstead Meniorial Baths last evening. The trophies will be competed for at weekly carnivals to' be held by the club, and last evening, the first of the series of races for them was held.
There was a. large attendance and the carnival was highly successful. A. Mathieson won the final of the Nicoll Cup event, and W. Sparrow the Curtis Cup final. G. Eyles was the winner of the junior race for the Bowman Cup. In a flying squadron race between the East Ashburton and the Ashburton Clubs, East Ajshburton reversed the Ashburton club’s narrow win in a similar event at the Borough Baths on Tuesday evening. The race was
th© most exciting of the evening, being won by a touch. The East Ashburton and, Ashburton clubs met in a water polo match, which proved highly exciting to the spectators. HAWKE’S BAY CARNIVAL. MANY RECORDS LOWERED. HASTINGS, February 5. The Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay swimming championships were concluded last evening, the titles being decided over two night’s swimming. On each evening there were six records lowered. R. Watkins, New Zealand mile champion, secure five freestyle titles from 50 yards to half a mile. Miss Edna Rainey, New Zealand women’s 100 yards champion, won three titles, netting records in all three events, covering 50 yards in 29 3-ssec, 100 yards in 67 4-ssec, and 220 yards in 2min 57 2-ssec. In the intermediate boys’ class 1'• Dodgshun (Gisborne) won all "the freestyle titles.
