PERSONAL.

Mr H. W. Brodie (overseas representative of Canadian Pacific Raihyays) was in Ashburton yesterday.

Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late- Mr H. J. Chapman at the meeting of the Ashburton East School Committee last evening.

Mr A. (Prentice, secretary-treasurer to the Ashburton Hospital Board, who has been on sick leave, returned to Ashburton from Mosgiel yesterday and resumed duty this morning.

Mr A. O. iPilbrow, manager of the Ashburton Gas, Coke and Coal Co., Ltd., is attending the 12th annual conference of the Gas Institute of New Zealand., in Christchurch.

Captain S. M. Satterthwaite (adjutant of the Ist Battalion, Canterbury Regiment) passed through Ashburton on the south-bound express this morning. He was met at the station by Ashburton infantry officers, who discussed various regimental matters with him.

Mr E. A. Denham, accountant at the Ashburton branch of the Bank of Australasia, w ill retire on Monday, February 17, after ever 40 years’ service with the bank. He joined the bank at Christchurch in 1894, and in 1907 was transferred to Ashburton as accountant. Later he was given charge of the Patea branch, but at his own request was transferred back to Ashburton, where he has remained with the exception of brief periods when lie was relieving manager at the Temuka and Timaru branches. He was also relieving manager at Ashburton for a time.
