LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 5, 1886). Inauguration Scheme —At the meeting of the County Council yesterday, Mr 0. J. Harper proposed the motion of which he had given notice at the last meeing of the Council—“ That a committee, consisting of Messrs E. J. Wright, E, S. Coster, W. C. Walker, and the mover, be appointed to report on the advisableness of considering a scheme for the irrigation of land, and to report in two months’ time.” The motion was carried. Mr Leadley’s name was added to the committee. Report co Hospital —The following is the report of Dr. Graham, Inspector of Hospitals, upon the Ashburton Institution:—The detached fever wards are not in a condition to be used, badly needing repairs, to which I have previously drawn attention. A considerable portion of the ceiling has fallen, and the dampness in cne of the walls is lamentable. Repairs are needed elsewhere, and the wards and. conndors, as well as the warder’s and matron’s rooms, have never been painted or distempered since their erection. ®r. J. E. Trevor continues his medical services. He is very regular in his attendance and is very highly spoken of. Arrangements are bing made for declaring this hospital a separate institution under the new act. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian, Feb. o, 1911). Enthusiastic Over Domain —To-day’s visitors from Belfast to the Ashburton Domain .were enthusiastic in their praise of the gardens and general appearance of their picnic grounds. The manager of the Belfast Freezing Works (Mr A. P. Hopkins) expressed his admiration for the Domain Oval, which, he said, could not have been in better order for the picnic. The picnic was under the patronage of the Hon. I). Buddo (Minister of Internal Affairs) who was present in the Domain for the afternoon. Hospital Boards—The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held this morning. Present: Messrs Hugo Friedlander (chairman), C. Reid, G. W. Andrews, Henry Davis, John Cairns and C. J. Harper. Dr. H. E. French (Health Officer for Canterbury) was also present. After the minutes \ had been read, Mr C. Reid said that he desired to enter his protest against an account of £7 18s 6d for chaff etc., which he alleged, was contrary to the Act, inasmuch as the articles or produce had been supplied by a member of the beard, as agent for another, Mr Reid’s objection was inserted in the minutes.
