THE WEATHER.
PASSING CLOUDS TEMPER HEAT. The sun shone brightly in Ashburton this morning, and conditions were pleasant. The sky was slightly cloudy, and the heat of the sun was tempered. There was a light north-easterly breeze. The maximum temperature yesterday was 69.4 degrees, and the minimum last night 45.1 degrees. The barometric pressure at 9 o’clock was 29.97 inches, compared with 29.99 yesterday. SUNSHINE IN JANUARY. The sun shone for 151 hours 4 minutes in January, compared with 178 hours 3 minutes last year. The total sunshine in December was 238 hours 3 minutes. There was no sun on January 3, 14 or 15, while on three other days the sun shone for less than 10 minutes. TO DAY’S FORECAST. (l'er Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: An anti-cyclone is centred east*\f New Zealand, while a shallow depression is approaching across the Tasman Sea. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaril is as follows: Light to moderate but freshening north-easterly to north-westerly winds. Weather fair tc fine and warm. Seas slight to moderate, but rising later north of Kaikoura.
