OBITUARY.
MADAME SPADA. (United Press Association—Copyright.) NEW YORK, January 2. Madame Spada died after a long illness. A New York cablegram dated, December 15, stated: Considerable newspaper space is being given to the revelation that Philip Newbury and his wife, Emily Spada, who were world famous 30 years ago as concert singers, are living virtually destitute in a small flat in the tenement section of Brooklyn. Madame Spada is gravely ill, suffering from hemiplegia and painful complications from a progressive chronic malady. The couple are living on a small relief allowance and Newbury’s occasional earnings for voice instruction. For many years illness has kept both from following their profession. MR F. T. WIMBLE. SYDNEY, January 3. Mr Frederick Thomas Wimble, chairman of directors of F. T. Wimble, Ltd., printing ink manufacturers, is dead, aged 90. He was well known in the printing and allied industries throughout Austria and New Zealand. 'Lite was born in England and bad been in business in Sydney for more than 50 years. , MR SAMUEL RYDER. LONDON, January 2. Mr Samuel Ryder, donor of the Ryder Cup for matches between British and United States professional golfers, is dead. SIR F. A. N. NEWDEGATE. LONDON, January 2. Sir Francis Alexander Newdigate Newdegate is dead, aged 73. Sir Francis Newdegate was chairman of the Coventry and District Employment Committee and president of the Birmingham Dental Hospital. 'Hie was a son of Colonel F. W. Newdigate, and assumed the surname of Newdegate in 1902. He was Governor of Tasmania from 1917 to 1920 and of Western Australia from 1920 to 1924. He had two long terms as a Conservative member of the House of Commons. - - MISS E. H, TRIPP. TIMAR'U, January 3. The death of Miss Eleanor Howard Tripp, Orari Gorge, occurred after an illness of several months. Miss Tripp, who was in her sixty-ninth year, was highly respected in the district, in which she took a prominent but unobtrusive part in social welfare and charitable work. Miss Tripp was born at Orari, being the third daughter of the late Mr Charles George Tripp and Ellen ■Shephard Tripp, and granddaughter of Bishop Harper. Of the same family are Mrs K. M. Stopford, Orari, Mis G. Pinckney, Glenarav, Southland, Mrs A. Hope, Timaru, Mr B. E. H. Tripp, Timaru, Mr L. O. H. Tripp, Wellington, and Mr J. M. H. Tripp.
