OARSMEN IN WATER.
FOUR RACING SHELLS FOUNDER. fPer Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 2. Four of five four-oar shells in the youths’ fours open event at the New Plymouth Rowing Club’s Regatta yesterday foundered in choppy water outside the harbour, and the fifth reached the shore half full of water. Thanks to the prompt assistance of launches, 20 oarsmen who were thrown into the water, in which a 12foot shark was reported to be cruising, reached land safely and with little damage to their boats. Rescue was difficult, as the launches could not come too close for fear of smashing the frail racing shells. Eventually the boats were all secured and towed in, when it was found that the Clifton Club’s boat had a hole, ui the bottom, probably caused by an oar or by a boat that was being towed with it. Two racing oars were also- .lost. The oarsmen were cold after a fairly long stay in the water.
