NEW YEAR HONOURS

FOUR NEW PEERS CREATED. ONE ORDER OF MERIT AWARDED GENERAL FREYBERG, C.B. (United Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, January 1, The New Year Honours List includes one appointment to the Order of Merit, and the creation of two new viscounts and four new peers. The King has conferred the Royal Victorian Chain on H.R.H. the Duke of Kent. The Duke of York has been promoted Lieu-tenant-General in the Army, Vice-Ad-miral in the Navy, and Air Marshal in the Air Force. The general honours list includes 34 knighthoods, of whom four are members of Parliament, and seyeral are distinguished workers in academic - and cultural fields. A number of honours are conferred on the occasion of the centenary of the Great Western Railway. Many honours are conferred on women. The chief names in the list are:— ORDER OF MERIT (0.M.) Field-Marshal Sir Philip Chetwode, Commander-in-Chief of the Army in India, and member of the Executive Council of the Governor-General of India since 1930. VISCOUNTS. Lord Hanworth, lately Master of the Rolls, a position which ho held from 1923. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Trenchard, who has just retired from the position of Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Force. BARONIES. Sir Arthur Shirley Benn, president of the federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire in 1931. Sir James Comer Berry, Bart., Deputy chairman of the Amalgamated Press Ltd., of Allied Northern Newspapers, of “Daily Sketch” and “Sunday Graphic.” Sir Thomas Catto, deputy-chairman of the Mercantile Bank of India, London, and director of the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation, London. Connibeare, of Melbourne, who devoted a large portion of his time to charitable and philanthropic work. He and his brothers have contributed more than £150,000 to hospitals and similar institutions since 1912. The Hon. A. K. Trethowan, M.L.C, (N.S.W.) one of the Founders of the Country Party. Dr. Hlfgh B. Devine, an eminent Melbourne surgeon. The Hon. H. A. Parsons, acting Chief Justice of South Australia. Mr W. R. Carpenter, or Sydney, founder and managing director of W. R. Carpenter, Ltd;, merchants island traders and ship owners. For many years he has taken a keen, interest in welfare among children. Dr. E. S. Cunningham, of Melbourne, editor of the “Argus,” from 1906 to 1928, at present chairman of the Edwin Wilson share in the “Argus” partnership.
