FLOODS EXTENDING
THE THAMES CONTINUES TO RISE MANY ROADS IMPASSABLE. WATER UP TO TEN FEET DEEP. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, January 1. Floods due to the recent heavy rains are still increasing in seriousness and extent. The Thames continues to rise all along its course from Oxford to Teddington, where the rate of flow has reached 7,500,000,000 gallons per 24 hours, which is a rise of 1,000,000 gallons on yesterday’s rate. Wide areas in Kent and Sussex, around Bristol, and in the East Midlands, as well as in the Thames Valley, are under water to depths varying from ten inches to more than two feet. Near Windsor the Thames is a mile wide. Many roads in all these areas are impassable, and traffic has been directed to the higher roads, often involving considerable detours. Damage due to the inundation is steadilv mounting. The Great Western Railway reported that a large bridge in Wiltshire, carrying the Devizes-Salisbury Road over the main line, is subsiding and that a section of the line had to be closed as a precaution. Traffic has been diverted to other routes. —British Official Wireless. —»~.
