SPEED 60 MILES AN HOUR.
SIX CARRIACES TELESCOPED. COLD INTENSIFIES BUFFERING. (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) BERLIN, December 25. ' The collision occurred on a bridge over the River Saale. The express, hurtling along behind two powerful engines, was making, up lost time. It hurled a carriage of the local train into the stream, flung another across the bridge railing, and telescoped six more. The driver of the first engine was injured and is unable to describe the accident. The driver of the second engine disclosed that he saw that the line was blocked, but the speed of 60 miles an hour made it impossible to stop in time. One passenger was hurled in mid-air and hung to the bridge railing for 20 minutes before he was-rescued. When he heard that his wife was missing he plunged into the river, where he swam about searching for her. She was later found dead. Six women and one girl weic among those fatally injured. Sappers from the Riesa garrison are searching the river for additional victims. Ambulances and fire brigades from adjacent villages removed the injured to hospital. The victims’ sufferings were increased by the intense cold.
