MAORI MORTALITY.
“DISQUIETING REPORT.” (Special to the “Guardian.”) PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 19. “I ani sure you will agree that the information contained in this icspect is disquieting)” wrote Dr. M. H. Watt, Director-General of. Health, when foiwarding to the Palmerston North Hospital Board the report of an investigation by Inspector Guinan, of Levin, regarding a number of deaths taking place among the Maoris in the HoroAvhenua district. 1 The report referred to the lack ot proper medical attention among the Alaoris, and tho unduo length of tangis, at Avliich some present had developed illness. ' v In an accompanying letter, Dr. Watt said ho was not aware of the methods employed by the Palmerston North Hospital Board’s district nurses in ai> tending to tho needs of the Alaoris in the Horowheriua district, but he was anxious to see the medical and nursing services placed an as satisfactory a footing as possible. He suggested a conference to discuss tlie position. After a discussion in committee the Board decided to comply with the suggestion and the chairman, Air J. Iv. HornbloAV, Avas appointed to cbnl'cr with the department.
