Mr J. Shaw was last evening appointed as the Borough Council representative on the . Ashburton Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) was last evening appointed to represent the Ashburton Borough Council’ at the annual conference of the Municipal Association at Napier early in March. Regret at the death of Father T. W. Price, parish priest at Methven and Rakaia, was expressed by the actinglector (Father M. J. Dowling, S.M., 8.A.) at the St. Bede’s College prizegiving ceremony at Christchurch last evening. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) will leave Ashburton to-morrow evening for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Executive cf the Municipal Association. He will be accompanied by the consulting engineer (Mr W. H. Stevens) when lie interviews the Public Works Engineer on Thursday in connection with the Hampstead drainage scheme. Reference to the . passing of Mrs Mary E. Hewson was made at the Ashburton stock market this morning by Mr J. T. Thomas, who said that for about 60 years she had been a familiar figure to stock dealers in the County, to whom she had been a- sincere 'and good friend'. The sale was adjourned for a quarter of an hour to enable buyers to attend the funeral. Miss E. L. J. Davies (pageant mistress) and Mrs L. E. Williams (president of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes) will visit Ashburton to-morrow, to confer • with Mrs F. Curtis (president of the MidCanterbury Federation), Mr W. C. J. Osman (president of the Advance Ashburton Association), and members of the Domain Board in connection with the presentation' in Ashburton on Saturday, Diecember 21, of the women’s institutes’ historic pageant.
