LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian,” Nov. 30, 1885). Novel - Entertaii^ment—A rather novel entertainment was given in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. On that night the Maori troupe under the direction of Mr Te Puke to Ao, the member of the House of Representatives. for the Western Maori District, made their appearance before an Ashburton audieilce. The troupe have been very successful at every place they have visited and they were welcomed by a. crowded house here. The entertainment consisted chiefly, of Native dances and well-known songs rendered in the Maori tongue. With regard to the dancing it, appeared ,to greatly amuse many of the audience, but it was a very different affair to that of the "good old times” when the Natives in the North Island amused themselves in this fashion more frequently than they do now. One very noticeable feature'of the entertainment on Tuesday was the evident desire of the performers to please their patrons, and the methodical manner in which the arrangements were carried out was worthy of all praise.' TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the "Guardian,” Nov. 30, 1910). Licensing Act—An interesting position is created ffiy Section 42 of the new Licensing Act, which raised the age at which a youth may be supplied with liquor, from 18 to 20 years. By this section not only does , the licensee commit an offence, but also the person supplied, and the latter is liable to a fine of £lO. Thus a youth under 21 if arrested for drunkenness, instead of escaping with a nominal fine, may possibly be penalised to the extent of a ten-pound note. Queen’s Birthday—To-morrow* is the sixtieth* anniversary of the birth of Queen Alexandra. 80,5 degrees of heat —80.5 degrees of heat were registered at the Domain weather station at 2 p.m. to-day
