Mr M. J. Savage, the Prime Min-ister-elect, is a bachelor, and it is possible that he is the first bachelor to hold that high office. Going hack to Seddon and Ballanoe, the line of married men is unbroken. Still going backwards are Sir Harry Atkinson, Sir Robert Stout, Sir Frederick Whitaker, Sir John Hall, Sir George Grey, Sir Julius Vogel,,, Mr Daniel Pollen, Mr William Fox, Mr G. M. Waterhouse, Mr E. V T . Stafford, Sir F. A. Weld, Mr Alfred Domett and Mr Henry who was the first Prime Minister from May 7, 1856, to May 20 of toe same year. Mr A. H. Todd, who broke his ankle on the Ashburton golf links on Labour Day, is about again. Senior-Sergeant IV. T. Kelly, of Invercargill, and formerly of Ashburton, arrived here last evening to spend a vacation of three weeks. Mr H. E. Herring, M.P., will leave Ashburton on Monday afternoon for Wellington, .where a caucus of the Labour Party will he. held on Tuesday morning. Mr T. H. Dunham, who has been in business as a tailor in Ashburton for nearly 20 years, will leave on Monday to join the firm of Stylish Mantles, Ltd., Christchurch, wholesale ladies’ clothing manufacturers. Mr W. A. Fleming (manager of the Timarii * branch of Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd.) arrived in Ashburton to-day. Mr Fleming was formerly manager cf the firm’s Ashburton branch. Dr. J. C. Beaglehole has been appointed lecturer and assistant professor of history at Victoria University College, Wellington, out of 27 applicants, several of whom were from England. Dr. .Beaglehole has been connected with the Workers’ Educational Association and is the author of several works on historical and other subjects (says a Press Association telegram). Mr R. S. Forsyth (London representative of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board) will visit Ashburton next Thursday on the occasion of the Board’s Mid-Canterbury export fat lamb competition at the Fairfield freezing works. Mr Forsyth, who was attached to the Ashburton staff of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, from 1916 to 1919, will give a short address to farmers at the competition, on the home market.

Mr A. McNeil, senior inspector to the Canterbury Education Board, will retire at the end of January, after 40 years’ educational 'experience in the Dominion. His successor will be Mr W. A. Service (senior inspector to the Otago Education Board). Curiously enough, Mr Service has three times succeeded Mr McNeil in important educational positions. He, too, is a Southlander and a graduate of Otago University. For some time he was a lecturer at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College and then he took over Mr McNeil’s position on toe Southland staff of inspectors. Again he followed Mr McNeil as senior inspector in Southland, and now he will take over Mr McNeil’s duties as senior inspector to the Canterbury Education Board.
