FLOODS IN FRANCE
THE RHONE ELEVEN MILES WIDE. FATALITIES AND GREAT DAMAGE
(United Press Association— Copyright) PARIS, Nov. 13.
The worst floods since 1840 devastated 150 miles of the Rhone Valley. The death roll is 15. Aeroplanes and troops are doing rescue work in Provence, where hundreds are waiting on rooftops for help. A rescue boat at Sorgues capsized and drowned eight soldiers and three civilians. Hundreds of cattle drowned, and vineyards ruined. The damage is estimated at £1,000,000. The Rhone is 25 feet above its normal level, and is 11 miles wide in some places. It is rising at the rate of four feet a day, and is swirling round the ancient ramparts of Avignon. A third of the town is submerged. Hundreds of citizens are living in the Town Hall and other public buildings. j.
