THE “DOPING” OF CALIENTE. APP ARENTLY FULLY RECOVERED CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 7. Analysis of the samples of saliva afforded proof that “dope” had been administered to Caliente, the favourite for the New Zealand Cup. The poison was mercuric chloride, a white powder, which could have been put in the horse’s feed. The mare was in bright order this morning, and apparently fully recovered. She was galloped five furlongs. It is not yet certain whether her engagement in the Cup will be cancelled. She will be given easy work to-morrow, and a decision will then be made. MARABOU’S PART-OWNER DEAD. SAW HORSE WIN THE CUP. MELBOURNE, November 7. Mr 13. Fell, part-owner of Marabou, i died in his sleep early this morning. Though a sick man, he attended the races on Tuesday and from his car in front of the stand was able to see Marabou win the Cup. EXEMPT FROM) QUARANTINE. HORSES FROM AUSTRALIA. CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. New Zealand horses returning from the inter-Dominion trotting championship at Perth next February will be exempt from quarantine on their return, provided they are certified to be healthy and free from ticks before leaving Perth, according to advice received by Mr H. F. Nicoll (president of the New Zealand ’Trotting Conference) from the Director-General of Agriculture. LADY OWNER’S DEATH. An Auckland exchange announces the death at Wailiou of Mrs Sarah Ann Lennard, who had reached her eighty-third year. She was among the very earliest lady owners to race

horses in the Dominion, nearly all of them of her own breeding. Among her chief successes were the Great Northern Derby of 1896 with Fabulist, and the Auckland Cup of 1910 with Waimangu, and that of 1911 with Santa Rosa. All three were in her ownership at the time of those successes, though the first and last-named iran later in other colours. Of all the deceased lady’s horses her favourite was the bonny mare Vieux Rose, whose descendants are even now being raced by one of Mrs Lennard’s sons.
