WHY NEPIA ACCEPTED LEAGUE OFFER. WANTED FINANCE FOR HIS FARM. GISBORNE, November 6. George Nepia, the famous Maori All Black, will leave Gisborne to-morrow for Auckland to join the Akaroa for England under a two years’ engagement with the newly-formed League Club, Streatham. He will receive a signing-on fee of £SOO, expenses both ways, and a wage of at least £3 10s a week. Nepia emphasised that he had no complaint against the Rugby Union, and found the change-over very hard, as lie realised that lie owed! iliis ■present position to the Union code. Howeyer, he required finance for his farm, and this seemed the only possible source. “I don’t think my Rugby friends will begrudge me in deciding to put my last years of football tot the best advantage for my own benefit,” he 1 said. He will be playing for the same club as Charlie Smith (Wairoa), McDonald (Marlborough) and George Harrison (Taranaki), also members of the last Maori team to tour Australia.
