ROLL NUMBER DECREASING. MANY PUPILS FIND POSITIONS. The Ashburton High School Board of Governors met this morning, when there were present: Dr. G. I. Miller (chairman), Messrs J. W. Bowden, M. Bruce, H. R. C. McElrea, E. H. Oit, F. Frampton, J. Brown and W. T. Lill. The headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroft) reported as follows: —- “The roll number is 216, there being 117 boys and 99 girls. Each month sees a lowering of the roll number. This is to be expected, as several boys and girls ate now obtaining positions ranging from farming for boys and shops to girls toi Public Service. “Tennis Courts—A splendid effort was made by a committee- of old girls, who convened a bridge evening in order to obtain funds for the repair or the tennis courts on the girls’ side of the school. An amount between £8 and £9 was raised. “The school will be closed for the Ashburton and Christchurch shows. “Examinations —Two of our sixth form pupils have, been successful in the term examinations of Canterbury College. The intermediate examinations commence in the middle of the month. Science apparatus: Permission is desired to obtain the science apparatus and chemicals lor next year. The cost will be somewhere near £3O. “Farm Report —Mb McGregor reports as follows:—New sheep yards are being built, and, as sleepers were not available, the posts and necessary timber were purchased. One Ryeland ewe lias been entered in the local show in order to give the boys some more personal interest in the slietep classes. As some of the boys were keenly interested in the model dairy competition, we are constructing a model t and have entered it on behalf of the Form 111. agricultural hoys, who are doing all the construction.” The Department of Education wrote that it had made a grant of £25 Is 4d toward the cost of installing heating apparatus in the school. The secretary (Mr G. V. Furby) stated tliat the schools in the County had been given notice of the closing of nominations of_ candidates for John Bell Scholarships. The chairman and! Messrs Frampton and Lill were appointed to- confer with the Mayor and the County Chairman in the final selection of candidates. For the .visiting committee, MiBrown referred to a number of minor requirements.
