THREE SMASHES

MOTORIST FINED £6. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. i. Returning from the Ashburton races recently, Frederick Hall swung his car out on the Main South Road to pass a lorry ahead of him. He veered over to the right and struck an approaching ear. He then swung back to the left and hit the lorry, bounced off, went to the right again and off the road, over a ditch, through a gorse hedge, and into a paddock. This morning, when Hall was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with dangerous driving, Senior-Sergeant Calwell alleged that the series of accidents had been caused by Hall’s excessive speed and manner of driving, and said that witnesses had declared that Hall was not in a fit state to drive. Hall pleaded guilty and was fined £6 and costs. His excuse was that, in passing the lorry, his foot slipped off the brake pedal and on to the accelerator, . thus causing his car to shoot forward.
