COUNTY CENTRES

RUAPUNA. A dance was held recently under the auspices of the Ruapuna branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The Huapuna Hall was decorated. with coloured streamers and greenery. Two plays, “World Without Men” and “Waiting for the Bus,” were staged by members of the Mayfield Women’s Institute. The lucky card dance was won by Miss M. Patterson and' Mi* J. Doonan, while the Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Symes and Mr R. Symes. The first on the floor competition was won % Miss J. Duff and Mr J. Sewell. Music was played by Dabourn’s orchestra. Mr S. Clifford was master of ceremonies.

There was a fair attendance at the opening of the Tennis Club’s season. The president (Mr F. Tasker) declared the season open.

WILLOWBY. The Willowby Methodist choir held the annual picnic at Peel Forest. The outing was thoroughly enjoyed by members and friends, some of whom came from Dunedin and Christchurch. Luncheon and tea were partaken of at Acland’s Cutting, and the afternoon was spent in rambling and climbing. A meeting of the church trustees, presided oyer by the Rev. R. McGregor, was held in the church vestry, when arrangements were made for the open-air fete to be held on December 18. The recent rains have transformed the face of the countryside. The crops are locking'particularly well. Shearing has been suspended for the time being.

ANAMA. ■ ■ rt The rainfall at “Laggan,” Anama, in October was 294 points, while for the same month last year 315 points fell. The total for the year to date is 2511 points. Last year the record over the same period was 3374. Lambing has about finished. Some percentages have b£en very high, while every farmer reports a good lambing. Feed is plentiful, but warm weather and bright sunshine is required to harden the grass, which has grown rapidly of late.
