CAULFIELD CUP.
HOW PALFRESCO WON. ‘ Notable performances have been registered in important handicaps in Victoria, but it is extremely doubtful it any eclipsed that of Palfresco m winning the 1935 Caulfied Cup i (ways a Melbourne writer). With only three horses behind him with a mile to go, Palfresco then unwound a tremendous run on the outside of the field. sustaining it, went right away in the straight to receive the verdict by a length and a half from Hot Shot, with the favourite, Marabou, a length tuither back, just in front of the Sydney representative Sarcherie. Palfresco s superiority at the weights became the more pronounced when the. time was announced as 2.27|, which clipped |sec. off the Australasian record that had been established by the New Zea-land-bred Game Carrington in his cup victory two years ago. When Palfresco began to make Ins run from the half-mile he went so fast round the outside that his pink and black livery could easily be seen flashing past horse after horse. Momentarily when the field bunched approaching the turn there .seemed a possibility of his effort being impeded, but as the horses swung round the bend,. each striving for a straight run to the judge, Palfresco manoeuvred his way through and was able to run into line without shortening a stride. He then made a dasli for the front and, stretching out in rare style to the vigorous riding of his strong lightweight N. Percival, had the race won more than a furlong from home. The colt continued to get over the ground in an astonishing manner, and he left a decided impression that he could have gone on much further. Palfresco walked back to the enclosure quite unconcerned at the great ovation accorded him. His rider was jubilant and, wearing a characteristic broad smile, he raised his cap in appreciation of the applause. Palfresco thus proved in a convincing way that his record track mile gallop of Tuesday was not a fluke. His form had been mediocre up to this victory, for as a. two-year-old he had won two comparatively minor events. Probably his best performances were his third in the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes to Young Idea, and his second in the Gibson Carmichael Stakes to .Carnarvon, one of his opponents in the cup. Since then he has given indifferent displays jin moderate company, but the outings certainly served to bring him to his top, for he was in superb condition when he went to the course. He relieved the bookmakers of a considerable amount of anxiety, for he had few admirers in doubles with the leading Melbourne Cup horses. Palfresco was bred at Mr S. Green’s Underbank Stud at Bacchus Marsh, being by imported Son o’ Mi no from: Little Mille, who was only a pony; but who won good races at Caulfield.
