ALARMING ’QUAKE

EASTERN CANADA AND STATES.

NO SERIOUS DAMAGE RESULTS. (United Press Association—Copyright) TORONTO, November 1. An earthquake, Which was severe in some areas, nearly all of Eastern Canada, and extended into eastern parts of the United States, at 1.0 a.m. to-day. It disconnected telephone communication with some parts of Ottawa, and alatrnjed thousands of people throughout Ontario', Quebec, and the maritime provinces. The shocks lasted 1 about 15 seconds in most districts, shaking buildings and moving furniture and pictures. So far no reports of damage have been received. A report from Newi York states that a house crumbled at Syracuse. The shocks were felt in New England, extending along Massachusetts and tlie Atlantic coast west to Windsor (Ontario), Detroit (Michigan), and Clevelandl '(Ohio). . A sharp shock rocked half a dozen cities in upper New York State. Large buildings were shaken in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Elmijra, (Plattsburgh and other places. The first tremor was felt in New York State for about 30 seconds, .being quickly followed by a second tremor in some localities. The Rev. J. J, Lynch, the seismologist of Fordham University, said that the tremors were probably surface disturbances, and harmless. _ln many parts of Canada and the United States people ran into the streets.
