A SERIOUS CHARGE
MALE ACCUSED FOUNID GUILTY.
(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, October 30. The trial of George Frederick Hewer, aged 49, described as a medical practitioner, and Phyllis Shorter, aged 31, a married woman, was concluded before Mr Justice Fair in the Supreme Court to-night. The accused were called on to answer two charges, that on July 18 last, with intent to procure a miscarriage, they unlawfully caused a young woman to take certain noxious drugs, and that on July 23 they unlawfully used an instrument or other means on the same young woman for the same purpose. After a retirement of four hours and twenty minutes the jury returned with its verdicts. It found Shorter not guilty on both charges, ana Hewei guilty on the charge of giving noxious drugs. On the second charge of using an instrument the jury failed to agree. Mr V. N. Hubble, for the Crown, said he must formally ask for a new trial on the second charge; but lie had no hesitation in saying he would recommend that a nolle prosequi, he entered. iHiis Honor made a formal order that a new trial be held at the next sittings. . ■ Mrs Shorter was immediately discharged from custody, and Hewer was remanded for sentence.
