METHVEN. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Methven sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held on Thursday afternoon, when the president (Mrs J. Woottofn) presided oyer fa good attendance. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs John Watson in her illness, and the wish expressed for her speedy recovery. The president referred to; the death of the late Mr J. Connolly, who had always been a keen supporter of the society, and on her motion a vote of sympathy was passed to his relatives. The report on the recent Appeal Day effort showed that it had been very satisfactory. A vote of thanks was accorded AlesdamesL Morgan, S. G. Holmes and E. A. Bland and Mr H. E. Jessep for their assistance, and to Mesdames J. Watson and Pyle for supplying afternoon tea to the ■workers. Owing to pressure of other engagements, Miss M.. Grieve tendered her "resignation as hon. secretary . This was accepted with regret, and it was decided to place on record appreciation of her services. Mrs H. E. Jessep was appointed to the position. Preliminary arrangements for holding a children’s fancy dress ball on November 29" were made: The nurse’s report for the last two' months was as follows: Visits to branch, 9; visits to homes, new cases 8, old cases 23—/total 31; visits to rooms, adults 93, babies 83, other children 14 —total 190. There were eight new cases for the two months, all breast-fed. Generally, the health of the children was good.

LYNDHURST. ' After a successful season, both socially and financially, the Lyndhurst Social Committee held its final social and dance in the Lyndhurst Hall recently. The comoetitions, which were in charge of Messrs G. Lilley and A. 'O. Gadd, were won by Mrs P. Prebble, Mrs W. Gilmour, Mr H. Noble and Mr J. F. Franks. The chairman (Mr G. Lilley) thanked all who had so loyally supported the committee throughout the season. He presented the aggregate prizes to Mrs O. W. Symes, Mrs iP. Prebble, Mr T. R. Greenaway and Afr A. Gordon. Music for the dancing was played by Mr and Mrs W. Cook and Air H. Addis. Mr A. C. Gadd was master of ceremonies.

RAKAIA. The street appeal at Rakaia for the sale of health stamps resulted in more than £8 worth of stamps being sold. The result of this appeal is due to the efforts of mentbers- of the Women’s Institute, and hockey clubs, who canvassed the township.

The Rakaia Boy Scouts held a successful “side-shows” evening in aid of their building fund on Thursday evening'! The various attractions were well patronised, and the satisfactory sum of £4 5s 3d was taken. Those in charge of the side-shows were: Skittles, Mr L. Hopwood) shooting, Air Nicol; “Aunt Sally,” Air H. Evans; 'quoits, Airs S. Wilson; nail-driving, Air L. Hopwood; skallywag, Air G. Smith. Alosdames Greenaway, O’Connor, Turten and Alisses E. Smith and E. Saunders were in charge of the refreshment room.

ROKEBY. The September meeting of the Rokeby-Alitehnm Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at the residence of Mrs C. Doig. The president (Airs V. Wilkinson) presided over a good attendance. All members stood in silence as a mark of respect of a late member, Mrs C. Gardiner. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Rickard in her illness. The roll call was “Use of a Lemon.” The competition, darning, resulted : All's Zieglar 1, Airs Penney 2, Airs Copland 3.

LISMORE. The monthly meeting of the Lismore Women’s Division of the Fanners’ "Union was held in the school on Wednesday afternoon. In the absence of Mrs Jacob; Mrs Addis (vice-president) presided over a good attendance, and extended a welcome to several visitors. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs A. Lill, of Greenstreet, who had been a resident of the Lismore district for a number of years, and with the relatives of the late Mr J. Connolly, ALP., members standing in silence as a mark of respect.-'; Mrs. Davis gave valuable bints .on. soap making, .and banded round samples ol soft. soap. Mesdames Davis and Barker judged the spring flowers, for which there was good competition. The awards were; Bloom, Miss Sparrow 1, Mrs Young 2, Mrs Addis 3. Short trumpet daffodils, Mrs Addis 1, Mrs Young 2. Narcissi, Mrs H. J. Lilley and Mrs Young ] (equal), Airs Ashton 2, Mrs Glassoy 3. Primroses, Miss Sparrow 1. Polyanthus, Airs Jacob 1, Airs Addis 2. Bowl mixed flowers, Aliss Sparrow 1, Mrs Sparrow. 2, Airs Young 3.

LOWCLIFFE, At the October meeting of the Lowcliffe Women’s Institute, Mrs llawstorn (vice-president) presided over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Institute Ode. Airs D. McRae, the delegate to the Mid-Canter-bury Federation meeting held in Ashburton recently, gave an interesting report, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. One new member was enrolled. It was agreed to make a donation to the School Committee to help defray the cost of recent alterations to the School. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Airs Hawke and Airs AlcKeage for providing forms for the Institute. The meeting, taking the form of Aiembers’ Day, Airs AfeRae took, the position of president, and Airs G. Hansen as secretary l . A dainty afternoon tea was served by members. The roll call, “A Scotch Joke,” caused much merriment. It was asreed to hold a fancy dress ball in the School on November 1. A play’ reading given by some of the members was

much appreciated. Games and competitions concluded an enjoyable afternoon. The winners of competitions -were: Airs W. Price, Airs Lloyd, Aliss Tait, and Miss Armstrong.

BARRHILL. Airs Hughes presided at the October meeting of the Barrhill Women’s Institute. Alembers stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Air J. Connolly, AI.P. Competitions resulted: —Pikelets: Aliss B. Chambers 1, Aliss R. Drew 2. Spring flowers: Miss B. Tizzard 1, Airs W. Toon 2. Aliss G. Smith won the social competitions. Alesdames T. Clemens and W. Tizzard were hostesses. HINDS.

The final euchre tournament in aid of the school prize fund was held in the Hinds Hall on Thursday evening, when there was a large attendance. Prizes were won by Air H. R-oek and Airs A. B. McDonald. The ladies’, aggregate was won by Mrs F. Hood, sen., and the men’s aggregate by Air H. Bock. The euchre was followed by a dance, the music, being supplied by Morris's, orchestra. Mr T. Gill was AI.C. ASHTON-WATERTON. A most enjoyable time was spent in the Waterton Hair on Thursday evening, when the members of the AshtonWaterton Women’s Institute Drama Club entertained their friends to'a social evening to wind up the club’s 1935 season. Alembers of the WillowbyEiffelton Drama Club were present. The evening was spent in dancing, items' and games. Items ivere contributed by Airs E. Blee and Mr 0. Emery. A Alonte Carlo medley Avas w-c-n by Miss E. Read and partner. The games- Avere won by Airs Allan and Mr S. AlcElbinney, and Miss E. Soal and Air S. McElhinnev. Music for the dancing Avas supplied by Mr R. Ford, Avith extras by Mrs A. Soal, Alisses H. Bell and W. Blee and. Mr T. Prendergast. Air L. Soal Avas AI.C.

Aliss Al. -Blee presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashton-Waterton Women’s Institute, held in the Watertton Hall on Thursday afternoon.. Aliss V. Bell gave a report on the half-yearly meeting of the Afid-Canterbury Federation held in Ashburton on October 4. A helpful demonstration on making leaf pastry was given by Airs W. Dawson. The competitions resulted: —Heaviest hen eggs: Airs Shimmins 1, Aliss E. Read 2, Miss Blee 3. Jam tarts: Miss W. Blee 1, Airs Shimmins 2, Aliss F. Bell 3. The special prize for the best organdie throAV-over Avas Avon by Aliss E. Read. The hostesses were Aliss E. Soal and Mrs Thompson.
