WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT HAMPSTEAD. The monthly meeting of the Hampstead Women’s Institute was held in the Memorial Hall yesterday. There was a good attendance of members and friends, the president (Mrs H. J. Constable) presiding.' A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs H Rainey, all members standing in silence. All members agreed' to contribute 6d toward the Health Camp Campaign. A letter was received from Barretts, 'Ltd., advising the extension of time for the knitting competition to November 1. It was decided to send a letter of congratulations to Mrs Rattray, who recently celebrated her 91st birthday, and also a letter of cheer to Mrs MaeConachie. The secretary was instructed to write for a parcel of basketware fiom the Blind Institute. A guessing competition was won by' Mis E. H. Childs and Mrs Constable. A social half-hour was enjoyed when items were given by Barbara Hunt (Mis H. J. Chapman, pianist), Mrs Green and Miss J. Rattray. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs K. S. McEachen for her able report on the recent half-yearly conference, t-» the performers, to the hostesses, and to Miss Kerr for judging sweets and M\ Clarke the flowers. Members were invited to the final meeting of the junior circle to be held on October 31. Results of competitions were: Spimg flowers, Mrs W. Thompson 1, Mrs Sutton 2. Pansies and violas, Mrs W. Wakeham 1, Mrs J. Hunt, junr. 2. home-made sweets, Mrs Ross and Mis Holland (equal) 1, Mrs Pike 2, Mis Church and Miss Fussell (equal) 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Rose, Walker, McAleer, Olliver and Miss Coldicott. THE TIN WALD MEETING.
The monthly. meeting of the Tinwald Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon,, the president (Mrs H. Houston) presiding over a fair attendance.
A report of the Mid-Canterbury Federation, held in Ashburton, was read by Mrs Houston. It was reported that arrangements were well in hand for a novelty evening to be held shortly to arise funds for the Timvald children’s picnic.
There was a fine display of basketware from the Blind Mrs F. Aldridge gaye a very interesting demonstration on making children’s washing hats, gym. dresses, and blouses, for which she was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Competitions resulted: Sponge roll, Mrs Houston 1, Mrs J. Roffey 2., Assortment of vegetables, Mrs Houston 1. . Tho roll-call for household hints brought forth some very useful suggestions. Good business was done at the sales table, and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs B. McKenzie an! Mrs E. Bell.
