The Rev. L. P. Bryan, of Ashburton, who has been attending the annual assembly of the New Zealand Baptist Union in Dunedin, returned by train this afternoon.

Sister Mildred will leave Ashburton on Monday to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Methodist Women’s Missionary Union, in New Plymouth as the representative of the Baring Square branch

The Rev. Eric W. Batts, of Gisborne, and formerly minister of the Ashburton Baptist Church, arrived in Ashburton to-day on his return from the New Zealand Baptist Assembly in Dunedin. He will spend the week-end here, and will conduct services on Sunday.

Motions of sympathy with the relatives- of the late Mr J. Connolly, M.P., were passed at the annual meeting.of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club last evening, and at the Hampstead Women’s Institute meeting yesterday afternoon.

Ashburton County judges who officiated at the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show yesterday were Messrs H. C ! . B. Withell (Ryeland sheep), P. L. Donald (cobs), J. H. Grigg (ponies), and W. Letham (Clydesdale males).

A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. Chnnolly, M.P., was carried in silence at* the meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union this afternoon, when tributes were paid to the work Mr Connolly had done in the interests of the farming community. A similar vote 'with the relatives of the late Mrs Arthur Lill was also carried. ,

Miss E. Eagle, -who will leave tomorrow* to take up a position on the New Plymouth telephone exchange, was entertained by the staff of the Ashburton Post Office yesterday afternoon and presented with an antique jewel casket and trinket box by the postmaster (Mr W. J. Minogue),. Miss Eagle has. been attached to the Ashburton exchange for some years.
