THE WEATHER

BENEFICIAL fall of rain.

SHOWERS THROUGHOUT COUNTY

A beneficial fall of rain was experienced in most parts of the Ashburton County yesterday afternoon and last evening after the wind had swung .-from the north-west to the south. Showers of varying length have refreshed the country, hut were not sufficient to give the gx*ound the soaking it required. Only four points of rain have been registered in Ashburton since September 15, and with .a succession of sunny days and warm, drying winds the countryside has become somewhat parched. Farmers at the stock sale today expressed their pleasure at having last evening’s shower, even though it was so light. In most districts a good fall is needed.

Only 15 points were recorded in Ashburton, but at Mr W. S. Strange’s Tinwald property the rain gauge registered 45 point's overnight. The temperature fell yesterday afternoon, anti conditions were showery until the evening. This morning bright sunshine prevailed again, but there was a cool breeze from the south. The barometric pressure this morning was 30.04 inches, a considerable rise having taken place in the last 24 hours.
