Mr H. S. Langford (railway business agent for the Canterbury district) was in' Ashburton to-day.
The Rev. L. P. Bryan, of Ashburton, will leave for .Dunedin to-morrow to attend'th© annual assembly of the New Zealand Baptist Church.
Commissioner F. H. Adams (territorial commander of the Salvation Army in New Zealand) and Mrs Adams, who were visitors to Ashburton during the week-end, have left for Christchurch, and North Canterbury.
On behalf of the staff of Moore’s Ltd., a presentation was made on Saturday to Mr A. Craighead and Miss Elnia McElhinney who have severed their connection with the firm. Mr Craighead was presented with a shaving set, and Miss McElhinney with a Morocco leather handbag. Both recipients have been, on the staff for a number of years.
Mr Kenneth E. Luke, of the Wellington City Engineer’s staff, has been appointed engineer at Wellington in succession to Mr G. A. Hart, who will retire next year. Mr Luke commenced his career with the Wellington City Corporation 28 years ago. Mr E. R. McKillop, at present water and drainage engineer, has been appointed deputy city engineer.
Miss E. Eagle, whc> lias been a member of the Ashburton Croquet Club for some years, and who has been transferred to the New Plymouth telephone exchange on promotion, was entertained by members of the club in the pavilion yesterday. The president (Mrs Andrew Lane) congratulated Miss Eagle on her promotion, and expressed the regret of members at losing last year’s junior champion. On their behalf she presented the guest with, a handbag. Miss Eagle was also the recipient of two posies.
Among delegates to the New Zealand Baptist Assembly, which will open in Dunedin to-morrow, who passed through Ashburton on the express train for the south this morning were the Rev. John Laird, of Auckland (retiring president), the Rey. M. W. P. Lascelles, of Wellington (secretary) and the Rev. S. Jenkin, of New Plymouth (chairman of the missionary committee). During the assembly the golden jubilee of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society will be celebrated, and a number of past and present missionaries also travelled to-day to attend the special functions.
