N.Z. HEAVY-WEIGHTS IN LONDON
At present there are no fewer than four Dominion heavy-weights in London—Gains, Cook, F’oord alid Strickland—and I hadi a message at the beginning of tlio week telling me that Wenstob. the Canadian cowboy, will be back again early next month all tuned up for Eddie Phillips. I- am told that Wenstob has benefited tremendously by the tuition he lias had from Jack Dempsey and is at least a stone bettei fio-hter than when he went to the States to train and be coached at the old champion’s place a few miles out oi New York. He is talcing; it for granted that ne will be in the Wembley bill with Phillips on October 8 and 1 have heard nothing in the way of an obstacle to their meeting. Assuming that wenstob and Phillips have a second iignt, as has been more or less definitely arranged,' I hope the Board of Control will not raise an objection to its being for the Empire cruiser championship. The contest warrants such a label. Phillips is accepted as our best lightheavy and I am pretty sure that there is no better than Wenstob in Canada. If Wenstob beats Phillips, he will probably seek out Jock McAvoy, and, as might he expected, he hopes to prove good enough for a match wit Petersen. Meantime, I impatiently await details of the Wembley prooramme. I hope room will be found lor Harvey. He tells me that he has never been fitter or keener. It would not in the least surprise me ii, alter Wem bley have had a further look round, they decide they could not improve upon a third match between mm and the Welshman. , f There is to be another search toi a possible heavy-weight champion. 1 am all in favour of competitions, but they will not be helpful if they are not confined to genuine novices, as distinct from those who have already been tried and found wanting. And since Wembley’s declared intention is to introduce much-needed new blood, why only be concerned with the outsizes ? It competitions are to become a yogue, why not tournaments which would rope in youngsters of each and every weight/ The heavy brigade should' not bo jnivileged to enjoy all the favours.
