DEAD-HEAT IN A.J.C. DERBY

SYNAGOGUE WINS EPSOM

SYDNEY, October 5

The Australian Jockey Club’s, spring meeting opened at Randwick to-day in ideal weather. The track was in splendid order, and the attendance was 67,000. African, ridden by the former New Zealand jockey, Gallop, threw his rider four times at the post, and then missed the jump-out at the barrier rise, but won the First Hurdle Race by a length. Homer, bred in New Zealand and purchased as a yearling on behalf of Mr J. S. Brunton, dead-heated in the Derby. Running second to Young Idea in the early stages, he ran to. the front passing the half-mile, and appeared likely to race away from the field to a comfortable victory, but Allunga, desperately ridden by Munro, joined issue nearing the post and divided the honours.

Peter Pan won the Spring Stakes with the greatest ease. The champion bounded away when heads were turned for home, and passed the judge three lengths to spare. An examination of Peter Pan after the race reyealed that he had received a cut near the fore heel and abrasions on the off hind pastern; but his trainer, F. McGrath, declared it was not serious, and Peter Pan will line up for the Craven Plate on Wednesday. He received a wonderful ovation when returning to the scales. He has now won £33,485.

Synagogue, though he drew the outside position at the barrier, reminded onlookers of Autopay’s all-the-way victory in the Epsom Handicap five years ago, excepting that Autopay led all the way from the outsider, while Synagogue trailed the pacemaker, Silver Jubilee. Young Idea’s form in the Derby was a great disappointment. He literally faded away at the turn and was well beaten. Homer’s part win in the Derby was wholly unexpected. He had recently been suffering from a liver complaint, although his track work was usually brilliant. M. McCarten was to have ridden Homer, but asked to be relieved of the mount in order to ride Loud Applause, who was also outclassed. Homer will now take part in the Victoria Derby. Allunga, bred in South Australia by Sir Sydney Kidman, was bought cheaply at the Sydney Easter sales for 120 guineas. K. Voitre, rider of the Epsom winner, said the brilliance of Synagogue enabled him to take and hold his position, and even at the finish, when a determined challenge came from the

outsider, King’s Head, his mount was going exceptionally well. P. Pike had no excuses for Silver Ring, who simply was not good enough on the day. Lough Neagh found the early pace too severe. * Results: — First 'Hurdle Race, of 300 sovs; about two miles —African 9.12 (Gallop) 1, Dango. 10.10 2, Lanaciau 9.0 3. There were 12 starters, including Havaspot. Wn by a length. Time, 3.39 J. Trial Stakes, of 500 sovs; one mile and a quarter—Measure 8.7 (Coutts) 1, Rogerio &.1 2, Volwood 8.5 3. There were 15 starters, including Gh.dswood, Debham and Viceroy. Won by two lengths. Time, 2.6. A. J.O. (Derby, of 5000 sovs; one mile and a half—Homer (A. Knox) and Allunga (D. Munro) (dead-heat) 1, Buzzard King 3. Half a furlong from

home Allunga challenged Homer, and a desperate struggle ensued, the judge declaring a dead-heat. 'Time, 2.37. Epsom Handicap, of 2000 sovs.; one mile —Synagogue 8.11 (K. Voitre) 1, King’s Head 7.12 2, Silver Jubilee 8.9 3. Won by half a neck. Time, 1.37. Spring Stakes, of 1500 sovs; one mile and a half—Peter Pan 9.6 (J. Pike) 1, Berestoi 9.2 2, Rogilla 9.3 3.
