MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s rooms yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance. Mrs J, D. Murdoch, who presided, welcomed several members of the Alontalto branch. The secretary was instructed to send; a letter of cheer to Airs AlcDowell. A letter was read _from Mr Kay (postmaster) regarding the health camp campaign. It was decided that for all correspondence of the branch health stamps will be used, and other assistance would be gladly given. The quilt made by members was on view, and a small committee was formed to dispose of it to a needy case in the district. An invitation was received from the Women’s Christian Temperance Union to attend its annual spring show on October 15, and it was decided to. donate one prize to the show. An invitation was also received from the Women’s Institute to attend an. open meeting on November 13, and the Montalto branch sent an invitation to its dance next Friday. A letter was read appealing for funds to provide Christmas cheer for the inmates of the leper station, and it was decided that a donation. he sent. A circular was received from the Ashburton P.W.M.U. appealing for gifts of produce, etc., to help their effort on October 25. Miss Linda Robertson gave an interesting account of the educational course for junior members, which she had attended in Christchurch. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss Z. Robertson was congratulated on winning second place for an embroidered cushion in a. competition in Christchurch. Mrs L. Hood demonstrated the making of crepe paper pouchettes. The competitions resulted: —Bulbs grown in fibre: Airs J. Kingan 1. Open jam tart.: Mrs J. McCormack 1, Mrs W. Robertson 2, Mrs D. Howden 3. Bloom: Mrs Kingan 1, Mrs J. !>. Murdcch 2, Airs R. Gallagher 3. Vegetable: Miss Z. Robertson 1, Mrs AlcCormack 2, Airs W. Robertson 3. The hostesses were Miss Buick, Alesdames Cornwell and Glassey. Airs Robertson was in charge of the sales table.

MOUNT SOMERS. Rain fell on six days during September for a total of 215 points, compared with 401 points in September last year. A maximum of 132 points was recorded on the 9th. The year’s fall totals 22.57 inches, against 31.17 inches in the corresponding period last year. Last month there were 24 frosts, with a maximum of 20 degrees on the 2nd. A total of 195 points was recorded at Buccleugh, bringing the year’s total to 18.65 inches., the corresponding figures for last year being 247 points and 29.28 inches. There was a fair attendance at the fortnightly euchre evening in aid of library funds. Prizes were won by Airs R, Young and Mr W. E, Glasson. Consolation prizes were awarded Mrs A. R. Recldey and All* J. Beattie. At a meeting of the Mount Somers Tennis Club it was decided to hold the opening of the season on Saturday, October 12, with a Yankee tournament. Those present at a. meeting of the Alount Somers sub-branch of the Plunket Society were Alesdames A. N. Grigg (president), D. Dunn, J. W. Gomyns, J. W. Quantock, S. Alactier and Aliss K. Bland (honorary secretary). A discussion took place in reference to the Plunket nurse’s visits, and it was decided: to ask the Ashburton branch if it would be. possible for fortnightly visits to be made until the end of the financial year, instead of monthly as at present.

LYNDHURST. The fortnightly social evening under the auspices of the Social Committee was held m the hall recently!. The competitions, which were controlled by Air T. R. Greenaway and Air O. AY. Symes, were won by Mrs R. H. Brawley, Airs Knox Cook, Air A. J. Reesbv, and Air A. Newton. The final social evening will bo hold on Saturday, October 12, when,the aggregate prizes will he presented. Alusic for the dancing was played by Air Knox Cook. Air A. C. Gadd ‘was master of ceremonies.

WILLOWBY. The ladies of the Sewing Guild met at the residence of Airs C. Noble on AVednesday afternoon. The afternoon was spent in putting the finishing touches to the garments for the forthcoming garden party. Work being so well in hand, it was decided not to hold another meeting before October 19. A dainty afternoon tea brought a pleasant gathering to a close. The contents of the “box” will be on view at the residence of Mrs Griffiths on Thursday. •

Aliss Vnlmai Do la Mare, who lias been relieving head teacher at the Willow by School for several months, was' presented with- a gift from the school: children on the eve- of her departure for the AA r est Coast. Mae Chapman made the presentation, and May and Elaine Knox asked Aliss De la Mare to accept a posy of flowers.
