THE FEDERAL LABOUR PARTY.

The Parliamentary Labour Party caused surprise to-day when it elected Mr J. Curtain leader of the party, and of the Federal Opposition in succession to Mr J. H. Sen Hi n, who resigned and declined to reconsider his decision a« his colleagues had asked.

Mr Curtain, who represents Fremantle, Western Australia., was born in Victoria, but has lived in Western Australia for many years.. He has been closely identified with the Labour movement in that state. He is one of the most eloquent speakers in the House of Representatives, and is regarded as one of the ablest in the Labour Party.

Mr F. W. Forde, who was thought to be the most likely leader was elected deputy-leader of the party.
