MR W. H. WOODS STANDING.

THE MID-CANTERBURY SEAT.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT MADE.

It has been announced that the Mayor of Ashburton (Mr W. 'HI. Woods) will contest the Mid-Can-terbury seat at the general election at the end of next month m the interests of the newly-formed Democrat Party.

Mr Woods has been resident in Ashburton for about 36 years. He first took up a position as book-keeper to the Canterbury flour milling company, and 1 he studied law and accountancy, being later admitted to the bar. In liis younger days he took a keen interest in Rugby football, as a player and as a referee. He has always been keenly interested in local affairs, and he has served on numerous local committees.

In May, 1921, he was elected to a seat on the Ashburton Borough Council, and he served on several important committees. He retired in 1927, but in May, 1931, he stood for the Mayoralty, and was elected He has held that office since, and is a member of the executive of the Municipal Asr sociation of New Zealand. He has been one of three Borough representatives on the Ashburton Electric-Power Board since its inception, and has served for some years on the Ashburton High School Board of Governors. Mr Woods lias been prominent in practically every civic movement since he has been Mayor, and he was chairman of the Unemployed Relief Committee for some time till its activities ceased.

THE LABOUR CANDIDATE.

THE REV. J. K. ARCHER. MENTIONED.

Though the Ashburton branch of the Labour Party has nominated three people as the candidate for the MidCanterbury seat, it is stated that the party’s choice of a representative for the seat will fall on the Rev. J. KArcher, of Christchurch. Messrs J. J. Phaup, H. E. Herring, and R. W. Wightman were the nominees of the branch.

Mr D. Sullivan, M.P., paid a visit to Ashburton last Sunday, and conferred with members of the branch, informing tliem that the National Execiitive of the Party claimed the right to make a nomination and a choice, and that Mr Archer had been nominated. It is understood that the final choice of a candidate will be made next Saturday.

LABOUR FOR HURUNUI. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The National Executive of the Labour Party has endorsed the candidature of Mr D. C. Daire for the Hurunui seat against the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes.
