THE GALA
POPULAR ASSISTANT CONTEST LAST WEEK’S LEADERS. The popular assistant contest promoted by the sports section of the Labour ' Day Gala. Committee has entered 1 on its fourth week, or lap. Leaders In the third lap were: Miss K. Hickey (Mr W. H. Amos’s office), Miss M. Henderson Havelock Coal Supply), and Mrs P. Totty (Totty’s Pharmacy). Voting was much quieter during last week, at least so far as the number of votes that were actually handed in was concerned. From inquiries made it would seem that voters are preparing to consolidate their position for a future sprint. A pleasing feature of the competition is the sporting way the young women of the town are taking the matter up. As one consistent competitor remarked, rhe is not concerned as to whether she comes first or last, for she feels that in some small way she is helping the association that has done so much for the town.
Votes handed in to Mr Furby’s office before noon next Saturday will be included in the placings for lap No. 4.
