TOURNAMENT AT METHVEN. HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. A The fourth annual tournament held under the auspices of the Methven Women’s Hockey Club took place on the Methven Domain on Saturday afternoon. There was a record entry of 47 teams, representing 27 clubs. The weather was ideal and the grounds were in perfect order. The organisation was admirable and the tournament was conducted with a minimum of delay. The games were controlled by members of the Ashburton and Christchurch Hockey Referees’ Association. In the majority of cases the games were fast and willing and many were very close. In a number of instances extra time had to bo played to finalise the games. The standard of play was particularly high in both sections, an interesting feature being the play of the Methven and Hornby midgets. The Kennett challenge cup for senior A grade ladies, previously held by Hornby, was won by Ashburton Hig School Old Girls, after a keen match. The senior ladies’ B competition was won by Lowcliffe. . ~ The W. Owen, senior, challenge shield for junior ladies’ grad©, also held by Hornby, was won. by Hinds, Metnven being runners-up.
