RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. OTAGO WINS FOR FIRST TIME. CHRISTCHURCH, September 21. Otago now hold the Ranfurly Shield for the first time. They beat Canterbury at Lancaster Park by 15 points to 6 in a game that was full of thrilling incident, though seldom was there any high-class back play with the wings breaking clear away. The tackling by both sides was too deadly for that. Otago led 7-6 at half-time. Play in the first half had been fairly even, though for one period of 20 minutes on end the fiery Otago forwards had given a real taste of their quality. The second spell was remarkable for the fact that after a torrid struggle in the closing stages, Canterbury dominated the play for 20 minutes on end, just missing tries by fractions, but then, gaps unexpectedly developed in the home defence and Otago grasped every chance of pressing home their advantage. Canterbury were beaten in the last 15 minutes of the match mainly because of the mistakes of some of then’ hacks. The biggest* factors in Otago’s favour were the splendid footwork of their forwards and the accurate kicking oi their inside backs. , The first score came when Otago were penalised for a breach in a lmeout and Deavoll sent over a fine penalty. After a great kick by Moitlock had saved Canterbury from a desperate situation, there was a sensational incident when lievathan potted a field goal for Otago He was collared by one man, wrenched himself free, and then another man swung at him, but yet when half oft his balance he got in this amazing kick wlucfi sailed clean over the posts. Almost immediately afterwards Otago burst through again. Quaid threw oft three opponents and took the ball to within ten yards of the Canterbury line. The backs joined in and Watt scored six inches from the corner flag, Trevathan s kick missing. Otago were penalised right against the touchlme, Deavoll kicking a beautiful goal. The half-time score was — Otago £ Canterbury ** In the scecond half Otago got much more of the ball than in the first and the backs made better use of their opportunities. Canterbury pressed steadily, but at length brilliant play, first by Smith and then by McFarland, gave Otago relief. Then Gaskin received the ball behind the scrum in his own twenty-five. He attempted to cut in but was thrown heavily, and in a second the Otago forwards had taken the ball from him, straight ahead, and with nearly all tho Canterbury side out of position Green scored an easy try. Trevathan goafed. Otago kept it up and when the defence weakened McFarland without trouble brushed past four men and passed to Quaid, who scored with the greatest of ease. Trevathan’s kick was a poster. Otago dominated the remainder of the game, which ended: Otago ...
