SCULLING.

BARRY CHALLENGES PHELPS. FOR ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP. The old-time rivalry which existed between the Thames-side professional scullers is likely to be revived by a challenge received on July 11 by “Sporting Life” from Bert Barry, the former holder of the world’s title.

Barry, who is filling an engagement in France, challenges Ted Phelps, to whom he lost liis world title in 1930, to a match on the tideway for the English championship. The Barnes sculler has sent a cheque for £6O as deposit and is willing to row for stakes of £2OO a side.

At one time one of the greatest fixtures on the professional rowing calendar, the English championship has not been contested! since 1919, when All Felton beat Ernest Barry (Bert’s uncle) over the Putney-Mortlake course. Bert Barry has made repeated efforts to get a match with Ted Phelps for the English title. A year ago there was talk of a race between Barry and Ted’s younger brother Eric, but the negotiations proved fruitless.
