THE ORANGE HALL
ENLARGEMENT DECIDED UPON.
WIDTH INCREASED BY 15 FEET.
REMOVAL OF WESTERN WALL.
As the result of a decision of the Ashburton Orange Lodge this week, Ashburton will be provided with a valuable addition to the halls aAmilable for dances and other public functions. The lodge has decided to enlarge the Orange Hall in Tailored Street East by moving the western wall 15 feet out to the building line in William Street. There is also a proposal to erect a smaller building at the rear of the hall for use as a lodge-room. This will leave the main hall entirely free for public functions during the week. All appointments will be placed within the building and it is understood that the control of the hall will be strict.
Since the renovations to His Majesty’s Theatre, the Majestic has become the theatre for general functions, but dances cannot be held there, and the larger accommodation to be provided at the Orange Hall will no doubt ensure its extensive patronage.
Erected in 1879, the hall was originally the Masonic Hall, but* was purchased by the Orange Lodge about 30 years ago when the Burnett Street premises were sold.
