SHOW DAY
COUNTY’S “TREMENDOUS FESTIVAL.”
•REFERENCE IN A MAGAZINE. Flattering reference to the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual shows is made by Mr O. N. Gillespie in an article, “Show Day in New Zealand,” published in the September issue of the “The New Zealand Railways Magazine.” The article is an informative one, and deals mainly with the shows of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, which this year attains its golden jubilee. The reference to Ashburton reads:—•
“ Every district has a carnival, and splendid and impressive shows are held in centres that in older lands would simply be regarded as a ‘gap in the hedge.’ Ashburton, a town of 4000 or 5000 souls’, has a tremendous festival. It has 28 acres of show grounds, vast modern exhibition buildings, and last year had 3037 entries, coming in close behind the great movable Royal Show. Each district specialises in some way, and Ashburton is particularly strong in horses, its enormous agricultural areas providing unexampled excellence in the whiskery Clydesdale and other equine types suitable for farm work ”
