MOTOR-CAR BRAKES

TESTING IN ASHBURTON COUNTY “DRIVERS ARE TAKING NOTICE.” On nine days' at intervals throughout August, the Ashburton County Inspector (Mr E. N. Johnson) has carried out an inspection of brakes of motor-vehicles in accordance with the annual Dominion-wide campaign. Cars and lorries have been stopped on a number of roads and some interesting statistics have been drawn up by the inspector. “There is no doubt that the inspection is having a good effect,” Mr Johnson told a “Guardian” reporter today. “There is provision for the issue of certificates by motor garages testifying to the fact that the brakes are in satisfactory older, and the large number of owners; who have taken their vehicles to be tested shows that most are cognisant of the importance of the campaign and are anxious to co-oper-ate.” Mr Johnson said that after this month raids would be carried out and if vehicles were found with defective brakes the owners would be held to be liable.

Details of this year’s inspection, with last year’s figures in parentheses, «re as follow:—Number of vehicles stopped on the road, 371 (612); tested, 282 (403); did not comply with regulations, 47 (130); garage certificates taken on the road, 52, and handed in at County office, 353, 405 (150).
