TELEVISION WONDERS

AUSTRALIAN’S PREDICTION.

GENERAL WITHIN FIVE YEARS

nited Press Association—Copyright) . LONDON, August 14. The general manager of , the 2KY broadcasting station, Sydney, Mr E. R. Voigt, has arrived in London from Germany and Russia. Hfe says he is deeply impressed by developments in television, which he says lie expects will be operating commercially throughout the world in five years. Mr Voigt says that Australia must resliaye its broadcasting policy imraeriately, as television is to cause revolutionary changes .in broadcasting, which will be entirely replaced as surely as silent films were replaced by talkies. •

Practical television was seen by Mr Voiglit in operation in Germany with surprising efficiency. It will necessitate the scrapping of existing transmission and receiving apparatus and the replacement at heavy cost of Australian commercial stations. Private manufacturers, he say's, already are planning to meet development. Mr Voiglit says he is convinced that the Australian broadcasting system is superior to that of any notion, and that competition between stations is essential to ensure the best programmes. Australian stations, however, must increase their power to provide efficient service for widespread listeners, as at present they are lagging far behind Europe in this respect . Russia is said by Mr Voight to be in the forefront of technical aspects of broadcasting, but not in quality of programmes. At present 600 men are erecting a short-wave station which is expected to lead the world. .
