HOSPITAL BOARDS

THE QUESTION OF LIABILITY.

(Per Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, August 28

The liability of hospitals for injury caused to patients by the negligence of nurses and doctors was the subject of a long discussion at the meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Hoard.

On the order paper for the meeting was a proposal that the point should be taken to the Privy Council in an appeal against a majority decision given in the Court of Appeal, but a letter from the Minister of Health, Sir Alexander Young, stated that such a procedure was not advised on the grounds that the acceptance of responsibility by Hospital Boards was more acceptable to public opinion and would obviate legal technicalities, such as haci m»notimes before prevented patients from obtaining any redress from injury received through negligence. It was anally decided that the section of the report dealing with the, decision to support an appeal to the Privv' Council be withdrawn from the report of the Finance Committee, and that the committee should make further inquiries into the position.
