BOXING.
BRANDER BEATS NICOL. INVERCARGILL, August 28. A professional boxing contest of lo two-minute rounds between Les Brander (list 10lb), of New South Wales, and Ray Nicol (12st 2lb), of Ohai, was won by Brander on points. The referee prevented clinching, and this made the bout fast and open, but did not suit Nicol. In a professional preliminary contest Billy Sullivan (12st 21b), of Ohai, defeated Alex Dasler (list slb), of Wellington, on points.
THE CARNERA KNOCK-OUT.
ENGLISH CRITIC SATISFIED. The sixth and last round was the greatest thrill seen in a heavy-weight battle for several years, writes an English critic on the Louis-Carnera fight in New York. Louis, who never gets on his toes, but always shuffles, suddenly became a brown human tiger. The right-hand punch with which lie first put down Camera, would have kept most boxers on the canvas for minutes, but Camera, as has liappeiired before, rolled right over, collapsed as he strove to rise, and then staggered straight into more punches that again toppled him. In all he was down three times, and to-day there is controversy as to whether the referee should have stopped the contest. I think thp referee’s action was right, although intervention came when Camera was standing up and was not even supported by the rones.
This is the second time lie has lost while on his feet. His condition when a halt was called was very hod. He was bleeding profusely and extremely dazed and groggy. A doctor recently! told me that when Camera neared his thirtieth year, which he is now doing, he would physically fade away. It is possible, therefore, that if he had been struck
again by his merciless negro opponent there might have been tragedy. There was no need to ask Camera about the punishment he took ? for he was outclassed, but to his credit it can be said that ho displayed exceptional gameness. Louis to-day is described by the majority of the experts as the No. 1 heavyweight of the world. It is said openly that if ever he meets Jimmy Braddock he will win the title. When I sat with Braddock after the fight lie admitted that Louis had impressed him, but added that he felt certain he could beat him.
