ASHBURTON WOMEN'S MATCHES.

THE COMPETITIONS CONTINUED.

Excellent playing conditions were encountered on Saturday afternoon for further matches in the Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association’s competitions, in which results were as follow : Senior Grade. Old Girls from scratch defeated Kereone (handicap 2 goals) by six goals to three. This was a keenly contested match, in which the play was of a very high standard. Old Girls made more use of their scoring opportunities, and in this team the most conspicuous were M. Carson, E.. Jary, and R. Brand. In the Kereone team, I. Smith, was a tower of strength, while M. Lawler was most valuable on defence. For Old Girls, the scorers were B. Brand (4), M. Carson, and E. Jary, while Kereone’s goal was shot

by W. O’Reilly. Mr EL Davidson was referee. Playing at Methven, the home team with a handicap of two goals, defeated; Tinwald (scr) hv three goals to two. This was a good, open match, the forwards of the visiting team being a little better than their opponents. They were unfortunate in having to play two junior members. E. Sullivan (Methven) was the outstanding half on the field. J. Cleeve scored for Methven, and F. Gudsell for Tinwald. Messrs W. C. Bishop and S. M. Johnson were referees. . Baring Sqluar© and* Raima, oaoii with a handicap of two goals, drew with five goals. D. Fowke scored tor Baring Square, land; the Rakaia goals were shot by O. Shannon (2) and C. Henderson. Mr W. B. Thomas was l*6f GT'GC* Hinds (scr) beat Lowcliffe (3 goals) by six goals to four. E. Anderson netted for Lowcliffe, and for Hinds J. Lowe shot two goals, E. Musson two, and F. Donaldson and J. Davison one each. Miss M. Fulton was referee. Junior Grade. By five goals to one, Methven defeated Tinwald. Scorers were: For Methven, Nl Ayres, I. Cretney, E. Patterson. J. Williams, and K. Smith ; for Tinwald, J. Henderson. Mr S. M. Johnson was referee. WOMEN’S REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. ASHBURTON v. S. CANTERBUR Y.

The Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association’s selector has announced the following team to represent Ashburton against South Canterbury, at Timaru, next Saturday:— Goal: A. Loach (Tinwald). Righ back: M. Ayres (Methven). Left back: M. Watson (Hinds). Right half: D. Fowke (Baaing Square). Centre half: E. Jary (Old Girls,'captain). Left half: R. 'Donaldson (Hinds). Right wing: F. Gudsell (Tinwald). Inside right: F. Donaldson (Hinds). Centre: J. Lowe (Hinds). Inside left: J. Davison (Hinds). Left wing: T. Morgan (Mount Somers). Reserve: J. Watson (Hinds). Mr W. O. Bishop will be manager of the team.

MID-CANTERBURY TEAM * CHOSEN.

Seniar grade players of the MidCanterbury Men’s Hockey Sub-Associa-tion took part in trial matches, on Saturday afternoon in view of representative fixtures against Geraldine, at Ashburton, next Saturday, and Canterbury, at Christchurch, the following week. . . . - Following is the team selected ior these matches: —

Goal; D. Harwood (St. Andrew’s). Backs: G.'Kelly (Baling Square), and A. C. Vincent (Ashburton). Half-backs: L. Snell (Ashburton H. H. Pearce (Ashburton), and R. Moylan (Ashburton). , Forwards: M. Lees (St. Stephens); K- G. Fowke (Baling Square), H. Harper (Ashburton), C. Corbett (Baling Square), and H. Gowans (St. Andrew’s). _ , Emergencies—Forwards, b. Watson (St. Stephen’s), and C. Young (Ashburton) ; half, Mulland (Wakanui); back, H. Sutherland (St. Stephen s). Junior Grade. In the junior grade of the competitions, Tinwald heat St. Stephen s by two goals to one. CHALLENGE SHIELD MATCH.

AUCKLAND, August 11. In a New Zealand Challenge Shield hockey match, Auckland beat Poverty Bay by eight goals to one.
