ASHBURTON V. S. CANTERBURY.

ONE WIN TO EACH. Honours were even ou Saturday when the annual representative matches between the Ashburton and South Canterbury Basketball Associations were played under, pleasant conditions at the Bay courts, Timaru. South Canterbury won the senior match comfortably with a score of 18-11, .while Ashburton just managed to snatch a win in the junior by the narrow margin of 10-9. The Senior Match. The teams were: South Canterbury (blue): Forwards, J. Ivey (capt), D. Btrahan and S. Christie; centres, A. Malthus, S'. Chisholm and J. McDonald; guards, B. Drennan, N. Price and M. Young. Ashburton (brown): Forwards, Mrs Holland, J. McMillan and M. Wallis; centres, E. Meredith, M. Brosnahan and R. Spedding; guards, A. Wells,. I. McLennan (capt), and T. Stalker.

Blue opened with a strong, attack, and pretty centre and forward play saw S. Christie open the score while Miss D. Stratum foilqwed with another. Miss McDonald snapped up a tie-bail and gave Miss Strahan her second goal. From the throw-off Miss McMillan secured and scored for Drown. Miss Brosnahan intercepted well, shot to tyliss Wallis, who dummied the pass and gave Miss McMillan a good goal. Good position play by Miss S. Chisholm gave Blue two chances, but Misses McJUannan and Brosnahan cleared and a sparkling movement was fielded well by Mrs Holland for Miss McMillan to get her third goal—three all. Blue forwards played all round their defenders and pretty work found Miss Ivey ring. Another line passing rush by Blue centres and forwards drew the defence away and allowed Miss Ivey to shoot again. Miss Drennan cleared twice and, with Misses Chisholm and D. Strahan, enabled Miss Ivey*- to goal again. Brown shooting spoiled several strong attacks. Miss Young, by a brilliant intercept, passed to Miss Malthus, who snapped the ball to Miss Strahan for a good goal. From a penalty in the centre Blue soored again and pretty work by Miss Strahan was rounded off with two goals. Another good movement by centres and forwards gave Miss Strahan a goal after the halftime whistle, to make the score 11-3 in favour of South Canter bury.

Brown did much better in tbe second half, and had their shooting been equal to their field work the result might have been different. This half was very bright 'and attractive, with clean, snappy play throughout. Mass McMillan scored first from a splendid movement started by Miss McLennan and carried on nicely by Miss Speddnig and Mrs Holland. Miss McMillanworked the ball well for another to shoot and, saving neatly, she ringed again. All Blue thirds took part in smart passing and, after a hard struggle, Miss Ivey secured and _ goaled. Miss S trail an worked the ball in neatly to score again. Then Brown missed five shots running, before Miss McMillan was successful. A brilliant fiew minutes followed, in which splendid passing was rounded off with equally good goals by both sides. Brown tried too many passes under the goal, and Blue guards cleared for two more* goals, both helped by good position work by Miss Clnsholm. Time found Brown having three shots at goal, from one of which Miss McMillan scored to make the final result 18-11 in favour of South CanterbUMr F- E. G. Malcolmson had charge of the game. s

The teams were:—

South Canterbury (Blue) —Forwards: Misses Cl Palmer, D. Grylls and Mi Browne. Centres-. Misses P. iPalmer, N. McNeal and B. Heap. Guards: Misses M, Crossman (captain), N. Pearce aand M. Coles..

Ashburton—Forwards: Misses' M. McGee, M. Forsyth and E. Donaldson. Centres: Misses D. Wilson, H. Grice and M. Alexander. Guards: Misses J. Knight, T. Harper (captain) and 0. Spedding.

This game was neither so clean nor so fast as the - senior. L-ong throws caused a good deal of confusion and jostling which could have been avoided by shorter and faster passing. Nevertheless the game was full of interest from whistle to whistle. South Canterbury started with a good movement, which, after going the length of the

court, ended by Miss C. Palmer goaling. Within a minute Miss Grylls had added another. Ashburton’s opening goal came from Miss'Knight’s interception of a long throw. Her pass was neatly taken b.y Miss Grice, and Miss McGee shot nicely. Brown centres gave their forwards many chances, but Blue guards cleared time and again. Miss Donaldson scored as a result of good work by Misses Wilson and Alexander, but Blue replied with another. Both sides scored in quick succession. Then came a stretch in which the guards of both teams controlled the forwards. Just as time was called Miss C. Palmer scored to put South "Canterbury one ahead, 4-3. From a scramble under the goal Miss Donaldson equalised. Misses Harper, Knight, Alexander and McGee enabled the latter to put Ashburton ahead, but Misses Crossman, N. McNeal and C. Palmef equalised. Miss Brown goaled twice from cleverly-combined mcyements in all thirds. Then both Miss Forsyth and Miss McGee goaled nicely from openings made by Misses Knight and Spedding. With the score 7 all, excitement ran high. A nice shot by Miss McGee put Ashburton ahead, while Misses Knight and Harper cleared attacks, and with Miss Grice gave Miss McGee another goal. Misses N. Pearce, P. Palmer and Grylls united in a successful movement, and after a few attempts Miss Grylls beat her opponent to the goal and netted, making the score 9 all. Almost immediately Miss Forsyth netted a spectacular goal. For a minute or two after time was called the hall travelled up and down, giving each side unsuccessful shots at goal, and the game ended 10-9 in favour of Ashburton when Mr R. J. Thompson signalled the finish. Teams Entertained. At afternoon tea in the Bay tearooms, Mr J. C. Hay hurst (president of the South Canterbury Basketball Association) welcomed the visitors, as did Misses J. Ivey and M. Oossman (captains of the teams). Mr R. J. Thompson and Misses I. McLennan and T. Harper replied for Ashburton. Miss R. M. Doak was in charge of the Ashburton teams.,

THE ASHBURTON COMPETITIONS.

The second; round of the Ashburton Basketball Association’s third grade competition and matches in the junior grade knock-out contest were played on Saturday afternoon. Results were ias follows: Junior Grade. Rokeby 17, High School 7. Tinwald 17, Technical A 12. Third Grade. High School B_ 13, Technical A 8. High School A 12, Technical 84.
