THE APPRENTICE DESERTER. (United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. Karl' Hjelmstrom, the 21-year-old Swedish apprentice, who deserted from the barque C. B. Pedersen, in Torres Strait in a wooden bath-tub, on which he improvised a sail, failed in a dictation test in French at Thursday Island. He was therefore charged here with being a prohibited immigrant, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment pending deportation.
