WHEELBARROW RACE
£llO RAISED FOR CHARITY.
ASHBURTONIAN THE WINNER. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHEJISTCHURCH, July 24. The staffs of the banks to-day held a wheelbarrow race in the centre or the city to raise funds for the Queen Carnival to relieve distress. All the passengers in the harrows were Christchurch hank managers. Thousands of persons thronged the short street wheie the race was held, and members of the bank staffs, mostly in fancy dress, collected £llO. It was obvious with only 100 yaids to go that the race was already won by the Bank of Australasia. The manager of the bank, Mr A. U. M. Mailing, sat his barrow heroically, while Mr J. S. Todd pushed him at a- gallop to the finishing line, a winner by several lengths. Mr P. L. Porter (Bank of New Zealand), propelled by Mr Callanan, won a hard fight for second place with Mr G. G. Littlejohn, manager of the National Bank, propelled by Mr H. L. Jamieson. Mr Todd is a son of Mr A. H. Todd, of Asliburton.
