OBITUARY.

COLONEL ALFRED DREYFUS. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) PARIS, July 12. Colonel Alfred Dreyfus, the central figure in the Dreyfus affair of 1894, is dead. 1 Captain Dreyfus, as he then was, was falsely convicted of selling French military documents to the German Government. The trial aroused antiSemetio feeling in France. After much agitation in which Emile Zola was prominent, the forgery was . proved and the delinquents punished in various ways. The proceedings against Dreyfus, who had been transported to Cayenne, were finally quashed in 1906, and he was restored to the army with the rank of major.

(Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Rt. Rev. S. J. Kirby (coajutor bishop of the diocese of Sydney), is dead, after a long He was aged 56. MR WILLIAM KENNEDY. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Mr William Kennedy, of Annat, who died recently, was for many years a well-known dealer in the Malvern and Methven districts. Born in County ■ Tyrone, Ireland, Mr Kennedy came to New Zealand at the age of 16 and with his parents settled at liangiora. Mr Kennedy served his time as a fellmonger, m wool and skins, and removed jo Annat, where he resided for many years before his death. Mr Kennedy was a member oh the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M. U., 1.0.0. F., for nearly 60 years, and was also a member of the Orange Lodge, Pride of Boyne, at Rangiora, of which he was one of the founders. Mr Kennedy is survived by his wife, seven sons and two daughters. One son, Francis, died of wounds in the Great War. The sons are Messrs George ancl Percy Kennedy (North, Island), Jack Kennedy (Oamaru), Joseph, Cedric and Vernon (Canterbury), and Charles Kennedy (Ashburton). The daughters are Mrs Shearman (Christchurch) and Miss Jessie Kennedy (Rakaia).
